Speciality Courses
This is one of the larger islands in the archipelago. The stunning reefs around Misool offer a breathtaking kaleidoscope of colour which offers a nice contrast to all the big stuff on other dive sites. Sloping walls are carpeted with soft corals of every colour imaginable housing all manner of critters from ghost pipefish to harlequin shrimp to pygmy seahorses.’
Cape Kri
This reef is one of the more popular dive sites of Raja Ampat and its no surprise why. Marine Biologist and respected author of a number of marine reference books Dr. Gerald R. Allen said “On my last trip to Raja Ampat, I recorded 283 fish species during a single dive near the Kri Island resorts. This is the most fishes ever seen on a single dive over a career spanning almost 30 years.”
Divers here can look forward to being literally engulfed by fish, huge swirling schools of dogtooth tuna, jacks, giant trevally and chevron barracuda. In addition to these expect to see large napoleon wrasse, car sized Queensland groupers and reef sharks as you drift along with the fish. Coral growth here is also diverse with all manner of hard and soft varieties. It is best to stay deep here to avoid the stong surface currents.
Sardine Reef
Sardine reef is a large off shore reef that slopes down to around 25 meters. There are no actual sardines here but the fish are so tightly packed that it derives the name of the dive site. Great schools of fish block out the light, jacks, tuna, trevally, they’re all here in huge numbers. There are also Australian Wobbegongs to be found here hiding under ledges and table corals. This dive really is a fish frenzy, you even need to stay close to your buddy if you want to keep them in sight for the living walls of fish.
Cross Wreck
Named after a cross marking the landing spot of the first Christian missionaries to Irian Jaya this wreck is upright on the sandy bed at 18 meters. The Japanese patrol boat is the most accessible of all Raja Ampat wrecks, depth charges and the ships lamps can still be seen. Penetration is possible to the communications room, engine room and front hold where features such as the switchboard and ammunition can be seen. Coral cover is good and plenty of reef inhabitants now call the wreck thier home, these include lionfish, huge napoleon wrasse, humphead parrotfish and all manner of critters that come our especially at night.
Critters Corner
At the end of the Cross Wreck is this delightful little area back towards the beach. In amongst the sand and rubble are a vast array of critters including frogfish, leaffish, devil scorpionfish, seahorses and mantis shrimp.
Shinwa Maru
This WWII cargo ship wreck is one of the more impressive, she lies on her port side from 16 to 34 meters. Two huge bomb damage holes on the starboard side are visible and all manner of debris including mine sweeping equipment, technical equipment, car batteries, cables ammunition and sake bottles is strewn around. Two diving helmets make a great photo opportunity. This wreck is not as densely covered in corals as the Cross Wreck, but is home to many schooling jacks and plenty of pipefish. The wooden floors of the bridge have collapsed and most of its contents are still there.
Aircraft Wrecks
There is a wrecked P40 that was shot down and now lies at 27 meters, the plane which is still largely intact was discovered in 1999.
The Passage
The passage lies between the islands of Gam and Waigeo. It is only about 25 meters wide and looks more like a river from the surface. A jumble of rocks marks the entrance to this enchanting looking dive site, the coral almost grows to the surface here. There is not much choice but to drop in and drift down the channel, pausing in bays where the current is more forgiving. Plenty of life can be found here including octopus, flatworms and cuttlefish, even the Wobbegong shark can be spotted on occasion. Schools of bigger fish await out in the current such as jacks, tuna, barracuda and sharks. Caves and arches also make up some of the topography here.
Pef house reef
The house reef of Pulau Pef offers good diving and snorkelling opportunities, with a great variety of fish and critters. Night dives are convenient, colourful and productive, with the endemic Raja Ampat Walking Shark often sighted. At times a school of Batfish reside under the pier making for good photographic opportunities, and often baby Blacktip Sharks can be seen playfully hunting small fish in the shallows under the restaurant. A snorkel along the house reef reveals colourful coral gardens and whatever your are lucky to encounter: Clownfish in anemones, schools of Bumphead Parrotfishes, every shape and size of reef fish, octopus, cuttle fish, resting Wobbegong Sharks, nudibranchs , Mandarin Fishes – the possibilities are endless.
Boo Island
From the surface area you will find a couple of boulders set aside through a little expanse of water, down below you will find Raja Ampat’s wealth underwater life at the ready to be discovered.
From the surface area you will find a couple of boulders set aside through a little expanse of water, down below you will find Raja Ampat’s wealth underwater life at the ready to be discovered. The very first thing you will find while you go down your BCD and plummet through to this vivid reef, can be a huge swim through in superficial water where a few divers can sink into all at once. This can be typically done by the end with the dive as there is a lot to check out before carrying this out.
Initially you will work the right path across a wall that typically features a great deal of the reason why Raja Ampat is extraordinary. Dendronephyta soft corals, barrel sponges, gorgonians as well as other varieties of acropora just about all contend for breathing space of such a brilliantly colored panorama of the blue. You should definitely check out the seawhips as well while you might be ready to see little commensal shrimps hanging on them, hidden within an indistinguishable green to that within their houses.
Across the wall, and everywhere else in this particular dive site really are a large number of nudibranchs and this includes Phyllidia nigra, Phyllidia elegans and Chromodoris willani. The wall will morph right into an inclined reef prior to giving route to a reef ledge, while you cruise across throughout scenery that appears to alter every matter of minutes.
Fabiacet
Fabiacet is known as a breath of refreshing air for everyone that aspires we’re able to often dive on coral reefs along with marine life as abundant as nature planned. If you are a worn out and exhausted grumpy aged diver, well then you should not sit this site out.
Fabiacet is known as a breath of refreshing air for everyone that aspires we’re able to often dive on coral reefs along with marine life as abundant as nature planned. If you are a worn out and exhausted grumpy aged diver, well then you should not sit this site out. Take your nitrox certification with you as this extraordinary Raja Ampat dive site is certainly one place in which you will surely be seeing to dwell down only if your air lasts.
Nearby rich waters all over such peaks and isles are incredibly deep and crystal clear. At this dive site, you will discover a number of the finest visibility in the beautiful Raja Ampat of around 40 meters and also the marine life is absolutely superb , hence take your wide-angle photographic camera lenses. Fantastic hammerhead sharks can be seen right here, given that the surrounding water is significantly deep as well as occasionally move towards not so deep water to find out about the boisterous, black and yellow rubber-clad, bubble-puffing critters are doing within the water.
The outside wall shallows are overpowered with brown, beige and cream leather corals as well as sponges. Neon fusiliers shine beyond and also the schooling ashen-lipped surgeonfish dive within a greater depth of water while you swim beyond. Green turtles sometimes appear busy consuming the sponges, and monochrome banded angelfish are typical at this dive site.
Farondi Island
Farondi Island highlights 2 famous dive sites. The Goa Besar and the Verena’s Garden. Among Raja Ampat dive destinations, Farondi Island is said to be the most favorite of all divers because of its distinctive seascape.
Goa Besar
Goa Besar is situated around the southern area of Farondi Islands. You are going to go down in a tiny southwest facing inlet upon a superficial wall top blanketed with plate corals, leather corals and yellow and purple sea squirts. Chromis and azure damoiselles indicate your dive to be the glint all over within the bright light.
Go to northwest part across the superficial shelved garden of yellow-colored soft corals and downward a wall within an underwater round gap. This hollow is filled with green, white and red black coral shrubberies, twine corals and covering sponges. Red ornamental ghost pipefish grasp undetected within the black corals.
Certainly the wall caves in to an overgrown shelf. Go along with this lowering towards the east and you will definitely experience a tunnel throughways colliding with about 25 meters along with green soft coral trees as well as yellow sponges. The tunnel is approximately 20 meters in length and 10 meters in width. Typically, you will discover nighttime snapper as well as sweetlips hanging out within the darker edges.
Off the right across the wall are incredible assortments of green, purple and orange soft corals, tiny fans, foxtail corals as well as whip corals. Take a look at the whip corals seeing that they coordinate whip coral gobies and hidden shrimps.
On the left of the channel, in the event a current is running, you could possibly observe countless lean fusiliers and huge fusiliers spilling on the wall. Around 20 meters you are going to encounter one more overhang that has fans as well as purple twine corals, shielding pound for yellowtail damsels and young coral demoiselles.
Gamfi Damu Island
The currents could very well be strong all across Gamfi Island however it is consistently good news given it produces nutrients towards the reef and you will probably discover the soft corals at their finest. Nearly all are at maximum extension, all set to capture and feed on any free hovering food items, including tiny sea water shrimp.
Jef Fam Group
Jef Fam Group of islands is another fascinating site in the Raja Ampat Archipelago. Jet Fam is composed of scenic group of several islands and islets that are lying straightly west of Batanta island.
Kaleidoscope
Getting a break from all of those large things you will probably want to try out the brilliantly colored wonders with this Misool Island dive spot. Even though you might have got to look beyond several Napoleon wrasse and mobula rays so you can get an infinite sight, what you will really find out is definitely a reef which showcases an irresistible variety of coloration.
Manta Ridge
With a beginner’s dive at only 6 meters, Manta Ridge is one of the shallow dive spots in the Raja Archipelago. It is located between the islands of Mansuar and Airborei, in the middle section of Raja Ampat.
Sel Pele Bay
Sel Pele Bay is considered as the macro underwater photography diving capital of the Raja Ampat archipelago. Here you will find lots of unique and weird seldom critters that basically made Indonesia diving very popular.
The bay is very wide and is situated o the west of Waig
South Penemu Island Pinnacle
Located near the southern part of Penemu Island, South Penemu Island Pinnacle is a less famous pinnacle that is usually visited by dive masters who jump in the blue water to bring a beacon in place. In the shallower portions of the pinnacle, there are many nice colorful anemones and soft corals covering the sections.
Raja Ampat is undeniably one of the best locations in the world for scuba diving. It holds a number of world records for marine bio-diversity including the highest ever recorded number of fish species seen in one dive: a whopping 284 different fish species were spotted at Kofiau Island. Amazingly, the waters surrounding Raja Ampat host an incredible 1508 fish species, 537 different species of coral and almost 700 species of mollusc, including 7 different variants of giant clam. The area is also host to 6 of the 7 known sea turtle species, some of which are endangered and rare.
Raja Ampat is also known as the Four Kings, and it’s easy to see why as this archipelago really does have royal status amongst divers. Raja Ampat comprises a large number of smaller isles, shoals and cays that border the main New Guinean islands of Batanta, Waigeo, Salawati and Misool. The area is very remote and predominantly visited by liveaboards, although there are a very small number of dive resorts nearby.
Aside from lush gardens of coral and magnificent reef, Raja Ampat offers spectacular macro life just waiting to be spotted and captured on camera by underwater photographers with a keen eye. Look out for miniscule pygmy seahorses, frogfish no larger than a green pea and the deadly but intriguing blue ringed octopus. Remember to keep a safe distance from these small and quick-moving creatures as they can kill an adult within minutes from a single venomous bite.
At Raja Ampat, even the most uncommon of creatures is commonplace such as the tiny mushroom coral pipefish. Divers are encouraged to check their dive log books before diving at Raja Ampat as you’ll need a number of blank pages just to record everything you’re likely to see in this fantastic location.
Moving up in size slightly from the critters to juvenile fish species, Raja Ampat features all of the regular fish such as angelfish, parrotfish, sweetlips and butterfly fish. There are also large cuttlefish, bump head parrotfish and a number of sharks to be seen such as the epaulette carpet shark and the odd-looking wobbegong shark.
Best Diving in Raja Ampat
Made up of over 1500 smaller isles, it’s no surprise that Raja Ampat offers a number of excellent diving spots to explore and each one is different in terms of structure, size and underwater landscape. Where the dive sites do not differ, however, is in the level of high quality diving they offer for both liveaboard and resort-dwellers alike.
Dive Sites in the North of Raja Ampat
Where and how to Stay in Raja Ampat
Liveaboards are the best option for divers looking to explore the immense number of dive sites in Raja Ampat. Liveaboards travel on different routes so be sure to check that your dream dive sites are included on the route you choose. Liveaboards are available to suit every budget including luxurious options that will provide high levels of comfort with lounges and large diving decks.
Raja Ampat has an interesting and unique climate due to its close proximity to the equator as well as the fact that it is protected by various mountainous island masses. In general, the area experiences a tropical climate characterised by rain showers and high humidity. For the maximum number of diving and liveaboard options, many visitors will choose to visit Raja Ampat at the start of October through April. These months are also the best for diving in terms of increased visibility thanks to reduced rainfall with consistent water temperatures around 26-30°C. However, it is important to bear in mind that increased plankton presence has an impact on visibility, meaning that visibility can range from 9-20 metres during these months. The high concentrations of plankton will bring along with them guaranteed sightings of large pelagic fish.
From the start of July to the middle of September is the least popular period with divers as the rains of the monsoon season and windy conditions have an impact on the calmness of the sea. In fact, some dive resorts even close down during this monsoon period. Luckily for divers, West Papua is magnificent all throughout the year and offers somewhat protected areas that manage to escape the force of the rough seas. Whale sharks can often be spotted in this area.
Getting to Raja Ampat
Getting to Raja Ampat
Visitng Raja Ampat is hassle-free when choosing the liveaboard option. As the archipelago is smack-back in the centre of the Coral Triangle, it is fairly remote and is easiest to get to by liveaboard.
The tree Gili Islands; Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan are located on the north-west side of Lombok. The Gili Islands are well-known for being one of Indonesia’s best areas for diving. With around 30 different dive sites offering a variety of underwater scenes. The dive sites around the Gili Islands are also world famous for sea turtle.
The water surrounding these smaller islands is a pleasant 28°C -30°C all through the year, making this area of Indonesia ideal for scuba diving holidays
Best Diving in Gili Islands
the Gili Islands are well-suited to all divers regardless of your experience level. Even the most experienced diver will continually be amazed by the variation in topography – these sites offer everything from reefs to canyons to healthy and plentiful coral gardens and even intimidating wall dives. Whilst the backdrop of each dive is colourful, varied and impressive, the marine life is equally diverse and remarkable. Sightings of large manta rays and sharks are common, but the locations also offer something for those interested in macro life such as pipefish, sea horses and the elusive frogfish.
One such muck diving site is Hann’s reef which is located to the east of the Gili Air island and presents the opportunity to take great underwater images of intriguing marine life such as nudibranchs and scorpionfish. On a larger scale, Shark Point is a collection of underwater canyons frequently visited by a number of shark species such as the leopard shark. Shark Point is also famous for manta ray sightings, particularly in the months of November to May. For advanced divers, Deep Turbo is a deep and daring dive featuring large numbers of garden eels and stingrays. To fully appreciate why the area is known as the sea turtle capital, visit the drift dive site known as Halik, where the turtles tend to be plentiful and unperturbed by the presence of divers.
Where and how to Stay in Gili Islands
The first two of the three islands, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are relatively quiet locations when compared with the bustling party island of Gili Trawangan. All 25 dive sites are easily reachable from any of the islands and each island offers all the services a tourist would need in terms hotel accommodation, restaurants and entertainment.
It is interesting to note that the price of diving at sites in the Gili Islands is fixed across all operators which means that no matter where you stay in the Gili Islands you will pay the same rate for diving services. This adds an element of fairness and ensures service and diving standards remain high.
The largest and most popular island for divers and tourists alike is that of Gili Trawangan. A number of dive shops are located on the island and there is a buzzing nightlife for entertainment when you’re not diving. Although Gili Air and Gili Meno are smaller both in terms of size and tourist numbers, these islands still offer a fair number of dive centers and provide the added benefit of being a secluded destination with everything you need for your holiday on your doorstep.
Getting to Gili Islands
Although they are hardly comparable in terms of tourist traffic, the Gili Islands are in fact only an hour away from bustling Bali by boat. The nearby island of Lombok has an international airport that connects to a variety of destinations within Indonesia as well as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and divers can simply get a boat from Lombok to the dive site of their choosing. Another option that is growing in popularity is that of Senggigi, a resort town to the west of Lombok where many divers choose to base themselves before heading out to the islands for their underwater fix.
Wakatobi Dive Sites : Waha Wall.
This wall is teeming with a huge variety of corals, huge barrel sponges and sea fans and it plunges to depths of 60m or more. This is a great site for passing pelagic fish such schooling tuna and eagle rays. It is possible to experience schools of spawning bumphead wrasse and parrot fish. There are many turtles, trevallies, and myriads of other fish in every direction. There are also many things to interest macro-lovers, if you can focus and tear your eyes away from the colorful bigger picture! Commonly we see a variety of nudibranches, leaf scorpion fish, porceline crabs, and many more interseting critters. This dive is suitable for beginner divers as well as advanced divers as currents here are generally mild or non-exis
Jon’s Point.
Located on the home reef this Dive site is characterised by its many overhangs and caves. The deeper dives on this wall bring you to overhangs where hammerhead sharks have been seen to pass. Reef sharks and Schooling barracuda are often sighted here. Many very large sea fans and encrusting coral species cover the wall creating a plethora of different colours.
Patuno Gate.
This home reef dive is situated in just a short boat journey from the resort. The dive begins on the sandy slope on the inside of the barrier reef where after a short swim we pass through a saddle at about 15m where turtles can sometimes be seen. As we pass over this saddle the reef drops away into a beautiful wall covered in an array of huge barrel sponges, soft and hard coral. Swarms of red tooth and Black trigger fish are in abundance here. The reef has many overhangs and swim throughs that house orange cup sponges and sea fans. Reef sharks, Spotted Eagle rays and Barracuda can also be seen here.
The Zoo (Waelumu).
This dive is at the tip of the long barrier reef which stretches out in front of Patuno Resort Wakatobi and ends in front of the Waelumu village area. The steep wall drops from 5 meters down to about 35 meters where it turns into a sandy slope which continues to extends down into the depths. A great dive where schooling barracuda and big eye trevallies are common, as are passing white tip and black tip reef sharks and dog tooth tuna. The wall teams with a huge variety of gorgonian sea fans of all different colours making it a great habitat for pygmy seahorses. Colemans Pygmys and Bargybanti’s have been spotted here. The 5 meter tip of this barrier reef makes for a enjoyable safety stop, where you can take your time enjoying the table corals and panorama of colourful soft corals.
Wandoka Pinnacle.
From the surface this pinnacle doesn’t look all that impressive, but once you descend down to 10m and begin to follow the ridge on the side you will be astonished by the variety of hard and soft corals, huge sponges, sea fans and black corals. This site is teeming with fish, and dog-toothed tuna and Big eye trevallies can regularly be found schooling here, along with schooling bohar snappers, schooling fusiliers, Giant trevallies, butterfly fish, turtles, and sometimes eagle rays. The safety stop on the top of the pinnacle provides an opputunity to take photos of scorpion fish and play with the tightly schooling juvenile striped catfish.
Turtle Transporter.
This often fast flowing drift dive is a favourite of many guests. A steady current flows along this wall indented with many overhangs and caves where large turtles often rest and shelter from the flow. Regularly turtle numbers can get into double figures with the larger specimens sitting staring back at the approaching diver. Other common seen sights include groups of large eagle rays, schools of large midnight snapper and a ‘family’ of Napoleon wrasse.
Coliseum.
This dives offers a bit of all, coral garden, sand slope, wall. The central part is a very pretty garden that starts at 5m/15ft, slopes down to 20m/60ft and continues deeper as sand slope. Eagle rays, mobula rays and schooling bumphead parrotfish are occasionally passing by on the slope. On the sides the garden is getting steeper, ending on two steep points – with a top around 8m/25ft and bottom more than 50m/150ft. The points are usually swept by current and their walls are full of fan corals, soft corals and lots of fish. Bargibanti pygmys seahorse are not uncommon and Coleman’s pygmys have been spotted as well.
Wanci Jetty.
Wanci jetty is a rare treat for underwater photography enthusiasts, accessible only at certain times. It is home to a profusion of species and enormous flashing schools of bait fish. The columns of the jetty are covered in sponges and fans, and the reef flat and slopes are home to cuttlefish, mantis shrimp, several species of morays and a variety of pipefish. A true muck dive that reveals more unusual creatures with every visit.
Topi Miring.
This site consists of two pinnacles connected by a saddle ridge, the slopes of which are covered in large acropora tables, barrel sponges and mushroom corals. The corals formations and sponges are huge and many experienced divers have commented on how pristeen and ancient these corals must be. Patrolling great barracuda, nudibranchs and many species of cryptic crustaceans are found here.
Red Fish.
This site is so named after both the large schools of red tooth triggers that are found here and a guest who helped discover the site. Here the reef consists of a gentle slope with high coral coverage ending in a sharp corner where you can hang out and watch the large pelagic species pass by.
Kapota Ridge.
The ridge here extends out from the island of Kapota’s home reef. The dive starts on a gentle sandy slope where many barrel sponges and foliose coral can be seen. Regular sitings of pelagic species such as dog tooth tuna and trevalies make this a popular spot.
Kapota Point.
On the furthest point of nearby Kapota Island, this site is one of the most vibrantly coloured walls in the region. Enormous sea fans and coral overhangs are found all over the wall, and schools of reef fish as well as pelagic drifters can often be seen taking refuge from the brisk currents that ensure a multitude of fish species.
Karang Gurita.
This is a great location for an outstanding days diving. This is a stunning coral atoll shaped like an eye. Several fantastic sites can be dived here. The dive sites here encompass walls, coral gardens, plateaus, ridges and slopes. You can see big sponges, a huge variety of sea fans, colourful soft and hard corals, schooling trevallies, barracudas, turtles, rays, reef sharks, or if you’re lucky even hammerhead sharks! This is a favourite dive site and guaranteed to be an exhilarating dive!
Clown Fish City (Karang Gurita).
As the name implies, this site is home to an amazing concentration of Amphiprion percula as well as several other anemone fish species. Located on Karang Gurita off the south east coast of Wangi-Wangi Island, it is an excellent place to encounter pelagic species and boast 25m+ visibility much of the year. The stronger currents in the area bring in impressive schooling fish.
Kaledupa Double Spur.
On the edge of nearby Kaledupa Island, Double Spur has some of the most pristine hard coral coverage in the area. The dive begins on a deep ridge covered in soft corals and anemones with resident porcelain crabs and ends in a shallow garden of large boulder corals, plate corals and anemone fishes of all species covering the reef.
Kaledupa.
The reef slope here has many overhangs and crevices where blue spotted rays hide away. The crest of the reef is covered in a variety of soft coral where large schools of fusiliers and juvenile trevally are seen.
Langira.
The crest of this reef sits at approximately 10m. Here very large coral Bombies are the dominant growth form with large numbers of juvenile reef species using this as a nursery area. The reef itself slopes away into the depths with overhangs housing blue spotted rays and more. Eagle rays and Tuna often pass in the blue.
The Ridge.
This ridge extends out from the top of Hoga Island’s home reef. The area often has currents running along it making this a drift dive. One of the best features of this site is the much loved ‘crazy corner’ where the current rushes around the tip of the ridge. It is here that large schools of pelagic fish such as giant trevally gather to feast of the even larger schools of fusiliers and triggers that reside here.
Inner Pinnacle.
These two pinnacles lie close to the Hoga home reef. The pinnacles have a ridge at approximately 15m connecting the two. Large schools of Barracuda are often sighted on this pinnacle as well as crocodile fish and large scorpion fish being prevalent on the top of the pinnacle.
Outer Pinnacle.
This is a large pinnacle near Hoga Island with a ridge leading away from it at a depth of 25m. Outstanding corals, big sponges, and a huge variety of colourful soft corals cover the pinnacle and ridge. On this dive you will be surrounded by thousands of fish, from giant trevallies, schooling fusiliers, passing tuna, great barracudas, large napoleon fish and many more. There are also many interesting nudibranches and frog fish for the photographers. This dive also offers the opportunity to look for the very well camouflaged scorpion fish and other critters during the 5m safety stop.
Hoga Channel.
This is a great site to visit at high tide when it offers great visibility and an abundance of fish, against a backdrop of spectacular coral. As it is a channel fish come to feed here at high tide as the currents bring plankton to the area, and other fish use it as a highway. This a spawning site for snapper especially at full moon, and we commonly see schooling barracuda, trevallies, napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrot fish along with many more smaller fish in large schools. This is one of the favourite sites around Hoga island.
Mari Mabuk.
The bigger reef area is called Mari Mabuk (which we’re told means, “Let’s get drunk!), and it had a number of excellent dives on it. Located at Tomia Island, this particular photo comes from a specific dive on Mari Mabuk called Roma. It is an exceptional dive site. Mari Mabuk has a maximum diving depth of about 60 m / 196.9 ft and is suitable for all divers. The average visibility is 10-20 metres and access to the dive site is by boat. It features huge sea fans, coral heads adorned in bright soft corals and feather stars blooming in the frequently swift current. The saddle that bridges the reef contains blue ribbon eels, leaf fish, crocodile fish, scorpion fish, nudibranchs and many more.
There are still many others diving sites around Wakatobi Regency, that can be explor during your diving trip to Wakatobi.
Wakatobi National Park (TNW) is one of the few and the largest marine national park in Indonesia. Coral reef ecosystems coastal marine ecosystems is rated as very productive that can be found in tropical waters (Supriharyono 2007). Ecologically coral reefs play an important role as a habitat for reef fish communities targeted by fishermen. TNW fishing communities in the region has relied on this resource their survival since time immemorial.
Utilization done so far is the fishing and making a rock by a traditional community. If this activity is not managed wisely it will likely evolve toward excessive exploitation. This would threaten the sustainability of resources, which in turn will affect the lives of the surrounding communities as well.
SCUBA DIVING IN WAKATOBI – Finest dive sites in the world!
BEST TIME TO DIVE IN WAKATOBI
Located just south of the equator, Wakatobi has an even, tropical climate with air temperatures around 32°C all year round. It is best dived between March and December – it’s the Wakatobi high season (most busy around April/May and September/November) during which the scuba diving is consistently good. July and August, while the water temperature may drop a little along with the visibility, is the best time for big numbers of fish as it’s coral spawning season. July/August can also see some stronger winds and surface movement.
Water temperatures fluctuate between a low of 25°C in August and a high of 30°C in October. Although this is not really a destination for large animals, certain times of the year are better than others. While a manta ray or whale shark could pass through at any time, pilot whale appearances are restricted to the November to April period.
January and February normally see the wet season here but rain is not as heavy here as in other parts of Indonesia. In fact it is said to be 4 times lower than the national average. So rain does not greatly affect the Wakatobi dive sites and visibility rarely, if ever, suffers from river run-off.
Currents are can be very strong on most dive site depending on what time of the month. You will find the strongest current around full moon. It is a good idea to have some dive experience if you are planing on diving Komodo during this time. It is also recommended to have yoru advanced certification.
There are also some quieter dive spots for those beginners but you may miss the incredible action of big fishes swimming into the current.
The current can sometimes reach 8 knots in some places. It is driven by tides so choose your dive site wiht this in mind which you can plan depending on the conditions.
This current is due to the Komodo and Rinca island acting like a bottleneck between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. This current is why Komodo waters are so full of fishes and so clear.
Tho you dive from a liveaboard you will always have boat suppoet to pick you up it hte current takes you.
To get to Wakatobi you can either fly to Makassar (Ujung Pandang) or Kendari and get a connecting flight to Wangi Wangi directly, or fly to Bau Bau (Buton Island) and find a boat to one of wakatobi’s big island. there is a direct flight from Bali (Denpasar) to Tomia island.
The Komodo National Park is formed by three big islands: Komodo Island, Rinca Island and Padar Island, plus a few other islands, total of 2,321 Km2 of protected land and sea. On 1986, Komodo National Park was declared World Heritage Site and Man and Biosphere Reserve by Unesco. Only in this area we can find the Komodo dragon, the largest species of living lizard in the world. An estimated total of 5,700 dragons that call this stunning part of Indonesia as their home.
The Komodo dragon, also known as the Komodo monitor lizard, is the largest living species of lizard. The Komodo dragon can grow up to maximum length of 3 metres and weighing up to approximately 70-90 kilograms.
Fossils very similar to V. komodoensis have been found in Australia dating to greater than 3.8 million years ago, and its body size remained stable on Flores, one of the handful of Indonesian islands where it is currently found, over the last 900,000 years.
As a result of their size, these lizards dominate the ecosystems in which they live. Komodo dragons hunt and ambush prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals. It has been claimed that they have a venomous bite; there are two glands in the lower jaw which secrete several toxic proteins. Komodo dragon group behaviour in hunting is exceptional in the reptile world. The diet of big Komodo dragons mainly consists of deer, though they also eat considerable amounts of carrion.
The Komodo dragon has a tail as long as its body, as well as about 60 frequently replaced, serrated teeth that can measure up to 2.5 cm in length. Its saliva is frequently blood-tinged, because its teeth are almost completely covered by gingival tissue that is naturally lacerated during feeding. It also has a long, yellow, deeply forked tongue. Komodo dragon skin is reinforced by armoured scales, which contain tiny bones called osteoderms that function as a sort of natural chain-mail. This rugged hide makes Komodo dragon skin poorly suited for making into leather.
Mating begins between May and August, and the eggs are laid in September. About 20 eggs are deposited in abandoned megapode nests or in a self-dug nesting hole. The eggs are incubated for seven to eight months, hatching in April. Young Komodo dragons are vulnerable and therefore dwell in trees, safe from predators and cannibalistic adults. They take 8 to 9 years to mature, and are estimated to live up to 30 years.
Scuba Diving in the Komodo marine Park is possible all year round.
Scuba Diving around the Komodo islands is most divers dream! Great variety of fish with fantastic and untouched coral reefs. You see big fish hunting actions, and pelagic at every dive site.
You will also see numerous of whitetip and blacktip reef sharks. If you are lucky you can spot bigger sharks like the Greyreef shark and also Hammerhead shark has been seen.
You are also very likely to dive with the magnificent peaceful Manta ray. You can spot them all year round but the best time to see them is during the rainy season when you can sometimes spot them schooling around you.
Liveaboard diving is a terrific and unforgettable way of exploring Komodo.
Best diving conditions is from March to October (March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October). Best season to see a lot of Manta rays is during the rainy season from December to February (December, January, February).
Visibility is best from November to January From January to March the sea can be a bit choppy but nothing bad

Go Gili – Lombok – Sumbawa – Labuan Bajo 24hrs. Simple (but long) bus ride through Sumbawa and then ferry from Bima to Labuan Bajo. This trip costs from 500.000IDR.
Coming from South Sulawesi / Bira
Go direct from Bira to Labuan Bajo or via Bima. This is a 24hrs boat journey across the Flores sea. It is a very cheap option, price from 125.000IDR. Mind the boats departs only every Tuesday from Bira.

We will dive manta ridge if the tide falls, to see a big amount of mantas hovering a couple of meters away, get fed by plankton carried by the strong current. We’re heading more west to Penemu and Fam Island aiming to dive the famous Melissa garden, you will see the best hard coral reef in Raja Ampat for sure.
The site is named after the diving pioneer, Max Ammer’s daughter and is rich of underwater biodiversity: thousands of tiny reef fish, black tips, wobbegong sharks, pygmy seahorses, and much more. For the third dive, we move to Kerou Chanel which can be a great drift dive if we get a little bit of current. It features a very nice reef, huge sea fans, and wonderful soft corals which are very good for macro. Yet, some bigger stuffs can pass us out in the blue. Finally, we’ll trek to Bintan Lagoon viewpoint, after we are done we start do a 6-7h night crossing up to the north to Kawe Island, one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
Day 4, We dive around Kawe Island, starting around the 3 famous island called Eagle Rock with their stunning reefs and, big fish soup, if you are lucky. The main reason to dive here is to see more Manta rays coming in to get cleaned in the cleaning stations around the rocks.
On the second dive, we move over Black Rock, one of the best reef up in the north. It has nice soft coral reef and insane amount of different schooling fish, great for pygmy seahorses, turtles, black tip reef sharks. Going a bit deeper, we’ll see big marble rays and mantas can passing by in the shallow part. After the second dive, we move back to the eagle rock again.
Normally, the current have changed by the time we get there and we can dive on different rock. After the third dive, we need to visit the village to get a permit before we mooring up inside the stunning Alyui Bay for a night dive at the famous pearl farm. Day 5, We’ll go for another wonderful dive in Alyui Bay, starting the morning dive at chanel #5., a dive site with nice swim throws among the big rocks, big schools of sweetlips, and fusiliers. White tip sharks sleep under the big rock, and pygmy seahorses are here and there. Here, we can also encounter dolphins, so keep out looking for them upon going up to do a safety stop. Then, we move to Yangeffo Islands for our second dive which was an exploration dive for our cruise director, when he worked for his old company.
The site was so good, a great mix of macro and bigger stuff, that make us keep coming since that moment. Getting a sloping reef down to 15 meter, continue drifting until hitting the sand area where you can see flamboyant cuttlefish, robust ghost pipefish, ornate ghost pipe fish, decorator crabs, nudibranches, shrimps, and frogfishes if you are lucky.
After a while, you’ll hit the reef again where you can spot eagle rays and manta rays on lucky days. After a stop around Yangeffo, we’ll continue the trip for our last dive of the day in Gam. On good days, this submerged reef has 5 meters visibility because the whole dive site is covered with schools of fish. We can also encounter the oceanic manta rays here. For the second dive we move to Sardine reef with submerged sloping coral reef which should be dived in current.
Otherwise, there is no fish around. It’s very good for big stuff as you’ll see school of fusiliers, rainbow runners, barracudas, sweetlips, giant trevallies, Spanish mackerel, grey reef sharks and much more. If there is current, you can get loads of hunting action and hear underwater thunder when the small fish move fast upon the tunas strike the bait ball.
